What to Expect at a Pedicure: A Step-by-Step Guide

A pedicure is a relaxing foot treatment that cleans, softens, and polishes your feet and toenails. You'll soak, have your nails shaped and cuticles tidied, get rough skin exfoliated, enjoy a lower-leg and foot massage, and finish with polish if you want it. The whole thing is comfortable and easy, so if it's your first time, there's nothing to be nervous about.

Before You Begin

When you arrive, you'll usually pick your polish color and settle into a pedicure chair, often one with a foot basin and sometimes a massage function. Wear or bring loose pants or shorts you can roll up past the calf, and consider open-toe shoes or sandals so fresh polish doesn't smudge on the way out.

Your tech may ask what you'd like, from a quick standard pedicure to a longer spa version with extra soaking, scrubs, and massage. It's the perfect moment to mention anything: sensitive skin, calluses you'd like softened, or areas to avoid.

The Soak

Things start with a warm foot soak. Your feet rest in comfortably warm, often lightly scented water while you relax for a few minutes. This softens the skin and nails, making everything that follows gentler and more effective.

It's also simply pleasant, so lean back and enjoy it. If the water is ever too hot or too cool, just say so; your tech can adjust it easily.

Nails and Cuticles

Next your tech dries one foot and gets to work on the nails. They'll trim and file your toenails to a clean, even shape, usually straight across to help prevent ingrown nails. Then they'll gently push back your cuticles and tidy the edges.

Good cuticle care is gentle. A little pushing and neatening is normal; aggressive cutting that hurts is not. Speak up if anything is uncomfortable, and never feel shy about it.

Exfoliation

With the skin softened from soaking, your tech exfoliates to remove dead skin and smooth rough areas, especially heels and the balls of your feet. This often involves a scrub and a file or foot tool to buff away calluses.

This step is what leaves your feet feeling remarkably soft afterward. If any spot is ticklish or tender, let your tech know so they can ease up.

The Massage

Most pedicures include a relaxing massage of the feet and lower legs, frequently with a lotion or oil. It's soothing, improves the pampered feeling, and is many people's favorite part.

Spa pedicures typically include a longer, more indulgent massage, sometimes with extras like a mask or hot towels. If you have areas that feel good with more or less pressure, just say so.

Polish

Finally, if you chose color, your tech cleans the nails and applies polish: a base coat, your color, and a top coat. Regular polish will need time to dry, so relax and avoid closed shoes for a bit. Gel polish is cured under a lamp and is set the moment it's done, so there's no smudge risk.

Take your time before putting shoes on. Those open-toe sandals you brought will thank you.

How Long It Takes and What It Costs

Timing and price depend on the type of pedicure.

Type Typical Time Typical Price
Standard pedicure ~30–45 minutes $25–$40
Spa pedicure ~45–60+ minutes $40–$80+

A spa pedicure costs more because it adds longer soaking, extra scrubs or masks, and a more generous massage. Both leave your feet clean, smooth, and polished; the spa version just stretches out the relaxing parts.

A Little Etiquette

A few simple courtesies make the visit smoother. Arrive on time and with clean feet if you can. Speak up about water temperature, pressure, or anything that hurts, since your comfort is the point. It's polite to sit still and keep your feet relaxed and available for the tech.

Tipping is customary in the US for good service, commonly around 15 to 20 percent, though it's always your call. And relax: your tech does this all day and there's no reason to feel self-conscious about your feet.

Enjoy It

A pedicure is meant to feel good, so let yourself unwind. If you're booking your first one, look for a top-rated local nail spa with clean tools and strong reviews so you're comfortable and in good hands.

Our recommendation: try a spa pedicure the first time for the full relaxing experience, then choose standard visits for regular upkeep.
